Eye Candy: Movements in Red (Infrared Time Lpase)

Andrew 's description from his Vimeo post:

"A moving infrared timelapse movie.

This is a personal project culminated from years of shooting IR stills and never really being satisfied with the results. Shot primarily in Albemarle County, Virginia, the movie was captured using a Canon 5D mark II converted with a 720nm IR filter over the sensor. The sensor filter allows normal camera operation but shoots only IR images. I used a rail from Dynamic Perception to create the moving images and processed everything in Adode Premiere/After Effects.

Check out my website andrewshurtleff.com to see some cool IR stills under the fine arts section. Thanks for watching."

Sometimes I Take Pictures

Since adding recording and producing a podcast, as well as opting to try and get back into the music thing, and all of the usual activities that take up my time. I haven't had much time to get out and take any pictures, or to draw anything for that matter. Hopefully, I'll get out to do something new soon. In fact, I think that'll be part of my goal for next weekend, assuming I don't spend it playing mechanic again, I'll try and make my way out to some place interesting and take some new stuff. Not that anyone's clamoring to see my photos, or anything else I do for that matter. But I have discovered I really like both taking photos as well as editing them, so. ANYWAY- this is one of many that have been sitting around for quite some time. It's obviously pretty minimalistic, especially compared to my usual stuff. It's not one of my absolute favorite to be honest (Blogger's shit ability to display photos isn't helping it any) and it works better as part of a set. But, I like it.

Eye Candy: Long Exposure Photo Of Moth Flight

"Fluttering wings leave lacy trails as moths beat their way to a floodlight on a rural Ontario lawn. The midsummer night’s exposure, held for 20 seconds, captured some of the hundreds of insects engaged in a nocturnal swarm."

Sometimes I Take Pictures

I know, I know. I promise I'm gonna get to something of substance this weekend. But first: Found him on the house the other day. It’s an imperial moth, I think. Never seen a yellow one before. Big guy too, about 4 inches across. I know it's my picture and all, but I like this one and you should really click on him for the larger view.

Sometimes I Take Pictures

This is one of four, looked to messy here all together. If you're interested, you can see the full set on the tumblr site.

Yes, I know I promised Science blogging. But that was before I got distracted by art projects and web designing. I'm gonna get to it, I SWEAR!

Yes, I know, I neglected you all again this weekend. I’d like to say I have a good excuse..but I don’t. I’ll start catching up later. For now, Here’s a picture I took. Because I’m on my lunch break, and I don’t have time to “science” right now.

Rainbow Toad Found After 87 Years

View this post on tumblr

First described in 1920, and last seen by European explores in 1942, the Sambas stream toad or Bornean rainbow toad, was recently rediscovered and photographed for the first time by a team from the University Malaysia Sarawak, lead by herpetologist Indraneil Das.

3 of the tiny, toxic amphibians, ranging in size from one to two inches, were discovered during the expedition, an adult male and female, as well as a juvenile. Each was found living in a different mature tree, along the ridges of the Gunung Penrissen range of Western Sarawak, a boundary between Malaysia’s Sarawak State and Indonesia’s Kalimantan Barat Province, on the island of Borneo.

The Bornean Rainbow toad is the second species on Conservation International's “World’s Top 10 Most Wanted Lost Frogs" list to have been rediscovered since the list was compiled in 2010.

Speaking of The Shuttle

While I missed the launch myself, since I’m an insomniac and Friday’s the day I generally try and make up for a week’s worth of no sleep; there are as always, loads of cool pictures to be found. My favorite thus far, is this one taken from above through the window of a Shuttle Training Aircraft.

Mokey Steals Camera, Takes Self-Portrait

From this week's Compendium:

Wildlife Photographer David Slater recently decided to take a trip to a national park in Sulawesi, Indonesia, to photograph a group black macaque monkeys living near a science base in the region.

Though never having had any previous contact with human beings, the group he found proved to be both friendly and inquisitive, allowing him to walk with them for several days, without ever displaying any signs of aggression. They did however show a keen interest in his equipment. And after leaving his camera unattended for a moment, one of the animals managed to knock it to the ground, setting it off.

“The sound caused a bit of a frenzy.”, Slater said.”They were quite mischievous jumping all over my equipment, and it looked like they were already posing for the camera when one hit the button.” “The sound got his attention and he kept pressing it.”-

Though most of the 100 or so photos the monkey managed to take before David finally retrieved his camera were of course out of focus, he did manage to take a few good shots, including one with David himself in frame, and the self portrait above.

Sadly, not only is this monkey a better photographer than me, but I make the exact same face whenever my picture is taken, which is one of the reasons why I never share pictures of myself.

Time Lapse and Panoramas- Chiemgau Impressions

Chiemgau impressions from Mario Feil on Vimeo.

The music in this clip isn't really my thing, but I am a sucker for time lapse footage and HD panoramas, which this video from Mario Feil on Vimeo has plenty of.

Enjoy.

Et tu Spock?

How could I possibly in good conscience mention Captain Kirk's birthday birthday but not Mr. Spocks? Answer: I can't. Sure, had I remember that today was Leonard Nimoy's 80th birthday I probably would have just mentioned the two together, but what can I say, I guess I'm just not a very good Star Trek fan.

Though obviously less active today where film and Television are concerned ( he actually announced his retirement from acting last year), like Shatner and the rest of the cast, Nimoy has gone on to do a variety of things post-Trek.

He's appeared in loads of television shows, the Star Trek Movies of course, two of which he directed ( he also directed Three Men and baby, which I did not know, but will try not to hold against him), he's an accomplished photographer (link contains naked people), AND he even managed to record an album of his own AS Mr. Spock.

So, if you're fan, why not take a moment to hop on Twitter wish @TheRealNimoy a Happy birthday?! Oh, and if you make a live long and prosper joke when you do it, you're a terrible human being and your children will all be born with two heads.

Leonard Nimoy, "Highly Illogical", from "Mr. Spock's Music From Outer Space"( I have nothing snarky to say about this as it is the man's 80th birthday).

This Week's Compendium

Once again I managed to Spend most of my free time busy on music this weekend, Which is a good thing, but, that also means it was a slow week on the blogs. None the less, While I only managed to squeeze in a single post here on Geekblog, I was able to get a hand full of strange and interesting things posted on Compendium this Week, beginning with:

The Czech Ballad of Swamp thing, which also serves as a showcase for a particularly amazing dance routine that I'm certain all the kids will soon be imitating. Next, came the fan-made trailer for E.T. 2, "Extinction", followed with a detailed account of how the male Anglerfish gets screwed, literally AND figuratively, there's Zombie art from Clint Langley, Henry Rollin's writes a Letter to Ann Coulter, and more. Plus there's a full weeks worth of posts from last week which I never got around to sharing here.

So please, if you haven't done so before, go and Check out my tumblr blog, Compendium oF Strange. It's a collection of strange and interesting art, music, and stories from around the web, and it's the blog I post in most often during the week- when I'm generally too busy working to find the time to sit and research science and news stories to write about here on Geekblog.

This Week's Compendium

So my hiatus from the net has lasted a bit longer than I had planned and things have been quiet around here for a lot longer than I had hoped. But the good news is that means that I have loads of stories to catch up on once I manage to free up a little more time. In the meantime, I did manage to keep up with Compendium this weekend, complete with a horrible x-mas theme.

I began with Team Unicorn's "Very Zombie Holiday", a field guide to surviving a zombie filled holiday. Next I suggested an alternative source of protein for this years x-mas dinner ( think Soylent Green), we go X-mas caroling with GWAR, hunt for pooping peasants in Spanish nativity celebrations, I introduce your children to the Krampus and more.

So please, if you have not done so before, go and check out Compendium oF Strange on tumblr and if you see something you like help me promote the sight(s) by sharing it with your friends using the tweet and like buttons I have provided on both individual posts as well as for the blog as a whole both here on Geek Blog and on Compendium. Sorry to go all self-promotional on ya from time to time, but while I genuinely enjoy working on the blogs, it's all kind of pointless if no one's reading it. So please help spread the word.

Thanks in advance, and I promise there will be much more science, skepticism and more here in the very near future.
