Sci-fi Short R'ha by Kaleb Lechowski

Even if you know nothing about video production or computer animation whatsoever, it should go without saying that the six minute indie sci-fi short above titled "R'ha", is impressive by pretty much any metric you'd like to apply. So the fact that other than some help with the music and the voice acting, it was created entirely by one 22 year old German film student named Kaleb Lechowski,  makes it astounding. Unbelievable job.

Plastic Demoscene Group: Catzilla

Catzilla is our latest project to date. It's a real time PC benchmark that will get all the juices from your PC.
Finally we had some time to make a proper demo. It was made with a nice collaboration with Platige Image. We did the code, they did the art. The music was made exclusively by Bent 'subsquare' Stamnes.
Thanks for watching!

There WILL be gifs. Oh, yes- There WILL be gifs.

Seriously though, I'm making gifs.

This Yo-Yo Video is WAY More Intersting Than You Probably Think It's Going To Be

So here's a sentence you've probably never heard before- "Hey, check out this Yo-yo video, it's amazing!" Or, if you have heard that sentence before, than your reaction was probably to stare back blankly, while slowly backing out of the room. I totally understand. But seriously, it's awesome, I think. Though there's always a fair chance that I'm just more easily amused than you are.

Higgs Boson And The Research Surrounding it Explained, in Cartoon Form

Via: phdcomics on:Vimeo

While we're on the subject of quantum physics, and sense this video is all about two of my favorite things; cause I'm the kind of guy that picks complex scientific disciplines and theoretical particles as his favorite things. Let's talk about the Higgs boson. Well, let's have someone who might actually have the required knowledge to talk about particle physics and the research surrounding the search for this theoretical bit of matter, talk about  it- in the form of a cartoon. Cause I believe, no matter how old you are, there isn't anything you can't learn by watching cartoons.

In all seriousness. I've written about the Higgs and particle physics in general, several times before. But the Higgs Boson, and the quantum world in which it exists, is without question, such a complex subject, that it's always worth revisiting.

Eye Candy: Ruin

So I actually found this animated short from OddBall Animation a while ago, and just haven't managed to get around to posting it. Simply put, it's amazing. Probably even more so if ,unlike mine, your Internet provider has not throttled you down to point where you cannot watch things in HD. But what makes this 8 minute short even more impressive, is the fact that it's mostly the result of the work of just one person. Though the films creator and director Wes Ball, does point out that he had a bit of help on the model rendering for the drone and main character, as well as a single intern to help with some of the animation. CHEATER!

Seriously, it took one person two years worth of work to make this. I can't even manage to post a single blog entry once a day, much less design my own, photo realistically detailed digital world, from scratch.

I am Jack's deep, burning, sense of shame and inadequacy.

The Cult of The Celestial Teapot (Not a Real Thing)

Crazy Watering Can from vania heymann on Vimeo.

No, don't worry. The Cult of The Celestial Teapot isn't a real thing. This video just reminded me of something...

"Is There a God?", Bertrand Russell (1872–1970)

"Many orthodox people speak as though it were the business of sceptics to disprove received dogmas rather than of dogmatists to prove them. This is, of course, a mistake. If I were to suggest that between the Earth and Mars there is a china teapot revolving about the sun in an elliptical orbit, nobody would be able to disprove my assertion provided I were careful to add that the teapot is too small to be revealed even by our most powerful telescopes. But if I were to go on to say that, since my assertion cannot be disproved, it is intolerable presumption on the part of human reason to doubt it, I should rightly be thought to be talking nonsense. If, however, the existence of such a teapot were affirmed in ancient books, taught as the sacred truth every Sunday, and instilled into the minds of children at school, hesitation to believe in its existence would become a mark of eccentricity and entitle the doubter to the attentions of the psychiatrist in an enlightened age or of the Inquisitor in an earlier time."

vania heymann, doesn't actually mention Russell's writing or his teacup, often referred to as the Celestial or Cosmic Teapot, as the inspiration for his video. But intended or not, it seems an accurate depiction of Russell's idea.

Time lapse: Compressed 02, Soap Bubbles & Ferrofluids

Compressed 02 from Kim Pimmel on Vimeo.

Red dye, soap bubbles, ferrofluid (a liquid which becomes strongly magnetized in the presence of a magnetic field), capillary action, and magnetism, combine to make an oddly mesmerizing time lapse.

Enjoy.
