Sci Fi Short: Plurality
Posted YouTube user: dennisaliu
I don't know why this has been sitting my bookmarks for all this time without being posted, but it has. It's amazing, and you should watch it now.
That is all.

Sci-fi Short R'ha by Kaleb Lechowski
Even if you know nothing about video production or computer animation whatsoever, it should go without saying that the six minute indie sci-fi short above titled "R'ha", is impressive by pretty much any metric you'd like to apply. So the fact that other than some help with the music and the voice acting, it was created entirely by one 22 year old German film student named Kaleb Lechowski, makes it astounding. Unbelievable job.

What would traveling through Hyper-space REALLy Look Like?

Traveling Through Hyperspace. Image: University of Leicester |
As the spaceship makes the jump to hyperspace, the wavelength of the light from the stars would shift out of the visible spectrum into the X-ray range. Meanwhile, Cosmic Background Radiation (CBR), which is thermal radiation that is spread fairly uniformly across the universe and is thought to be left over from the Big Bang, would shift into the visible spectrum, appearing to the crew as a central disc of bright light.
“If the Millennium Falcon existed and really could travel that fast, sunglasses would certainly be advisable,” said Connors. “On top of this, the ship would need something to protect the crew from harmful X-ray radiation.” "
So basically, what you'd see -assuming you could look out a window in the first place, which seems inadvisable given the torrents of amplified thermal radiation pounding against your vessel, but if you could. Odds are you'd see something like the representation above. By which I mean the still black and white one not the gif, that's from Spaceballs; there's probably not a lot of plaid in hyper space
But even if the truth about traveling at light speed isn't as interesting as you might like it to be, aesthetically speaking. It's still a pretty awesome thing to try and imagine; stars streaming at you so quickly that they all soon disappear from view behind a wall of white hot light. Not to mention the astounding distances you'd be traveling while they do it. And more importantly. Knowing, not only what traveling through hyper space might look like, but also what it would mean for the levels of deadly microwave radiation bombarding any ship traveling through it, are just two more examples to add to the already lengthy list of reasons for us all to stop and acknowledge Star Trek's superiority to Star Wars. Since it's now obvious that Luke, Han, and the gang, would clearly have been cooked like potatoes through those 70's party-van style portholes on the Millenium Falcon. While Kirk, Picard and the rest, would have been just fine observing the universe on an advanced view-screen from the comfort and safety of their shielded Starship.
And isn't that what REALLY matters?
I think it is.

Eye Candy: Xenomorph Desk Lamp from Evil Robot Designs
So here's a thing I desperately want, but can't have. One, because it's sold out. Two, because I probably couldn't afford it anyway.

Apocalypse Later, Surf Now, An Apocalyptic Surf Music Video
Surfing, doesn't even come close to making the list of things I've EVER had an interest in. I hate the beach, I don't swim, I don't like the sun. But hey, throw in an aerial battle of apocalyptic proportions, and suddenly, you have my interest. Love this.
I still don't care about the surfing thought.

"Plot Device", From Red Giant Software
In this short from Red Giant Software, a young film maker orders a strange device from the internet which ultimately turns his world into a revolving door of cinematic conflicts which each click of the mysterious device's single red button. While I’m not sure of the budget behind this one, or exactly how many people are involved, and I think it’s ultimately just meant to be a commercial for the company’s editing software. The end result is a funny, original, well made short, filled with genuinely impressive visuals. I really like it, and I thought you might as well. So check it out.

Et tu Spock?

Though obviously less active today where film and Television are concerned ( he actually announced his retirement from acting last year), like Shatner and the rest of the cast, Nimoy has gone on to do a variety of things post-Trek.
He's appeared in loads of television shows, the Star Trek Movies of course, two of which he directed ( he also directed Three Men and baby, which I did not know, but will try not to hold against him), he's an accomplished photographer (link contains naked people), AND he even managed to record an album of his own AS Mr. Spock.
So, if you're fan, why not take a moment to hop on Twitter wish @TheRealNimoy a Happy birthday?! Oh, and if you make a live long and prosper joke when you do it, you're a terrible human being and your children will all be born with two heads.

Leonard Nimoy, "Highly Illogical", from "Mr. Spock's Music From Outer Space"( I have nothing snarky to say about this as it is the man's 80th birthday).

Shatner's 80th

But I simply could not pass up the oportunity to share one of my favorite things in the history of recorded time, Two of my favorite beings in the known universe, William Shatner and Henry Rollins (who's 50th I failed to mention last month), together performing the track “I can’t Get Behind That” from Shatner’s 2004 album, “Has Been”. Happy belated 80th Bill!
Enjoy.

Unfortunately, there is no official video for this song, why no one set up a camera to record this session I’ll never know, but the song itself is the important part, so just hit play and listen!

Sharktopus-VS-Mega Piranha

There comes a time when you just have to give up and accept things for what they are. I want the Sci-fi, sorry, "Syfy" channel to not suck. I want shows like Ghost hunters to go away not multiply and shows like Farscape and Firefly to come back. And when they run movies, I want them to run movies like Blade Runner and Star Wars instead of Pirates of the Caribbean or Elf. But it's obvious that none of that is ever going to happen. And so, the MST3K fan within me has accepted the Syfy channel for what it is, a place to watch intentionally bad(?) Syfy films purely for the comedic value. Behold the newest challenger for the bad movie throne, "Sharktopus".

Why is Sharktopus only a challenger and not the king sight unseen? Because there is still "Mega Piranha."
