My Favorite Show EP04: Worst Sock Monkey EVER!
After all the religion and politics on last week's episode, I thought we could use a bit of a palate cleansing this week. Which, depending on your perspective, may not have been as good an idea as I thought, given the amount of scatological content in this week's episode. But I enjoy it. The episode, I mean. I enjoy the episode, not the scat.
In This week's episode: Skyfall- World War Z- and Jurassic Park 3D- A New Zealand scientists denied permission to use the word Hobbit in the title of his lecture on Hobbits ( Homo floresiensis) - a South African man skydives naked for Rhinos- A woman turns to Craig's List seeking a sexual rendezvous with a dog- While another poster just wants to know, Who does THAT, to a sock in K-mart?- A widower fulfills his wife's last request- Australian Priests ATTACK- a teacher accidentally shares topless photos with her students- and Illiterate Ethiopian children learn to hack android-
Our Favorite things for the week: Tara talks about Tom's Basement, an alleged lost episode of the Tom and Jerry cartoon, involving murder, torture, and piles of decaying bodies. While I recommend the band, Abnormality.

Been a while since I terrified and repelled you with one of my favorite things. So please enjoy ignoring, reviling, and or dismissing as mindless noise, the above song from Hate Eternal.

A Brief History of Video Games
“An abridged history of video games in under three minutes. Made using only sounds, music and video from the video games themselves. Produced for Polygon.com by Reverse Enginears featuring P Sus.”
The more of these games and sounds you can identify from memory, the more ANCIENT A creature you must be.. For the record, I knew them all.

Apocalypse Later, Surf Now, An Apocalyptic Surf Music Video
Surfing, doesn't even come close to making the list of things I've EVER had an interest in. I hate the beach, I don't swim, I don't like the sun. But hey, throw in an aerial battle of apocalyptic proportions, and suddenly, you have my interest. Love this.
I still don't care about the surfing thought.

Creepy-weird Japanese thing of the week: Hatsune Miku, The World’s First Holographic Pop Star
So this week’s Creepy-Weird thing from japan is a little more on the weird side then the creepy. But Leave it to Japan to make the worlds first synthetic pop star, and to form said pop star, in the uber-cute, uncomfortably-sexualized-schoolgirl motif, that we’ve all come to know and love.
Hatsune was created by Crypton Future Media as the face of vocaloid, a Yamaha created technology, which gives music composers the ability to synthesize singing by simply typing in lyrics and melody. Exit Tunes Presents Vocalogenesis feat. Hatsune Miku, became the first vocaloid album to top the Japanese weekly Oricon album charts, in 2010.
Hatsune had already begun “performing” live in holographic form before her album even made the charts. In August 0f 2009, Hatsune appeared “live” on stage for the first time at the Saitama Super Arena. A performance soon followed up with an overseas appearance, on November 21, 2009, in Singapore.
And my friends wounder why I gave up trying to become a musician.

Shatner "Sings" Iron Man...
Posted by Youtube user: WilliamShatner
In case you don’t already know, amongst his various other activities, William Shatner occasionally likes to release…let’s call them “vocal albums”. My favorite of his offerings came from His 2004 album “has Been”, in the form of a track called “I can’t get Behind That”; which featured a guest appearance from Henry Rollins -yes, THAT Henry Rollins. For his next album, “Seeking Major Tom”, due out in 2011, Shatner recorded this version of Iron Man, featuring Zakk Wylde. The results are…well, let’s call it “Shat-tastic™”.
And if you thought was good, wait till you hear his version of Bohemian Rhapsody…

George Hrab's Twitter song (Dragon Con 2011)
Posted by Youtube user:ipeeepay
Normally, I'm not much for puns. But somehow, George manages to make them funny. So, for those of you who also enjoy George Hrab (Music/The Geologic Podcast) and terrible, terrible puns, I give you both; along with Evan Bernstein (The Skeptics Guide to The universe) and Brian Brushwood (NSFW/Scam School/Weird Things).
And if you are a fellow skeptic/science geek/ETC, who is somehow unfamiliar with George, Brian, or Evan, be sure to follow the links provided to check out their various podcasts, as well as the rest of George's music.

Flaming Lips And Gummy Fetuses

From Last Week's Compendium:
So, do you like the Flaming Lips? Of course you don’t, YOU HAVE EARS!. But A gummy fetus on the other hand, that sound delicious.
In a rather obvious, and desperate attempt to shock people into remembering that they still exist, The Flaming lips have released three of their songs loaded onto a usb drive inserted into the back of, what I can only hope to be an edible gummy fetus. Cause, if you can’t eat the fetus, then what’s the point really?
Oh, if I had a dollar for every time I uttered those words….
Personally, what I find most shocking about this particular marketing ploy, isn’t the use of a potentially edible item formed in the shape of a human fetus, but the fact that a band like the flaming lips did it, and not some obscure death metal band Like say, oh… I don’t know… DYING FETUS!
Oh well, he who acts first I suppose.

Behemoth Frontman Facing Blasphemy Charges in Poland

I first wrote here about Adam Darski, AKA "Nergal", frontman and guitarist for my favorite band Behemoth, about a year ago. At the time, he had just released a statement refuting claims by the religious that he had found god as a result of his leukemia diagnosis; for which he was then awaiting a bone marrow transplant. I also mentioned that earlier that same year blasphemy charges brought against him in Gdynia, Poland, had recently been dismissed. While there's since been plenty of good news where Adam's cancer is concerned, it would unfortunately appear that I was wrong about those blasphemy charges.
The good news is that after a years worth of treatment and recovery, undergoing chemo therapy and a bone marrow transplant Nergal ( sorry, I just can't call him Adam again) , has made a near complete recovery and is reported to be doing well. Just last month the group released some new rehearsal footage on their Youtube channel with Nergal back on the guitar, and though still understandably looking a bit thin, he otherwise appears to be in good shape and says that the band plans to start playing shows again in Poland in October before moving on to other parts of the world. All of which, makes me very happy to say.
The bad news of course, is now that his battle with leukemia is thankfully nearly over, he still has to face the polish legal system for charges of having committed an "offense against religious feelings" (sec. 196 of polish Criminal Code). The charges themselves stem from a performance by the band 14 years ago in Gydnia, in which he (quite fairly in my opinion) referred to the catholic church as, "the most murderous cult on the planet", before destroying a bible on stage. If found guilty of the clearly unforgivable crime of having hurt NAMBLA's, I mean, the catholic church's feelings, he could potentially face up to two years in prison for his "crime". Nergal himself briefly commented on his most recent court appearance last month saying;
"I spent 5 hours In the court in Gdynia today, the case is back on track and there's still [a] few witnesses to be interviewed. It's way too early to give any further comment. I just hope the final verdict is gonna be positive for me. I have a feeling that I'm in this situation for right reasons and I'm not giving up. Cross fingers! The battle ain't over yet..."
As for the actions which earned him the charges in the first place, as today's video from a 2008 show in Tilburg, as well as a variety of other examples on Youtube clearly illustrate; Nergal obviously regrets what he's done in the past, and promises he'll never do it again. No really, swear to god.
Best of luck Nergal.

Good Friday Sing Along- SLAYER: "Cult"

"Cult", which appeared on the 2006 release, "Christ Illusion", was released as a single on June 6th of that year, and immediately found it's way onto a lengthy list of my personal favorites from the band, primarily because of it's lyrics; which were also the reason I decided to post the song today.
A quick note for those of you who are turned off by the "satanic" nature of bands like SLAYER, as well as pretty much everything else I listen to on a regular basis. Try and remember, that like the overwhelming majority of metal bands, the guys in SLAYER are actually a bunch of godless atheists whose songs tend to be more anti-religion and anti-war than anything else, and the whole Satan thing, is really just a gimmick.
If, on the other hand, you're turned off because you just can't stand the music. Well then you're just destined to be deprived of all that is good and wonderful in the world, and will no doubt be forever doomed to a life of mediocre, unimaginative, and meaningless pop songs. Sadly, there is nothing I can do for you, except suggest that you click HERE for something more your speed.

LYRICS:
Oppression is the Holy Law
In God I distrust
In time His monuments will fall
Like ashes to dust
Is war and creed the master plan?
The Bible's where it all began
Its propaganda sells despair
And spreads the virus everywhere
[Refrain:]
Religion is hate
Religion is fear
Religion is war
Religion is rape
Religion's obscene
Religion's a whore
The pestilence of Jesus Christ
There never was a sacrifice
No man upon the crucifix
Beware the cult of purity
Infectious imbecility
I've made my choice
666!
Corruption breeds the pedophile
Don't pray for the priest
Confession finds the lonely child
God preys on the weak
You think your soul can still be saved
I think you're fucking miles away
Scream out loud, here's where you begin
Forgive me Father for I have sinned!
[Refrain:]
The target's fucking Jesus Christ
I would've lead the sacrifice
And nailed him to the crucifix
Beware the cult of purity
Infectious imbecility
I've made my choice
666!
Jesus is pain
Jesus is gore
Jesus is the blood
That's spilled in war
He's everything
He's all things dead
He's pulling on the trigger
Pointed at your head!
Through the fear you're sold into the fraud
Revelation,
Revolution,
I see through your Christ illusion!
The war on terror just drags along
My war with God is growing strong
His propaganda sells despair
And spreads this violence everywhere
[Refrain:]
There is no fucking Jesus Christ
There never was a sacrifice
No man upon the crucifix
Beware the cult of purity
Infectious imbecility
I've made my choice
666!

Tim Minchin's "Storm" The Animated Movie
First, it's been a long time coming and there are undoubtedly plenty more geeks like myself who are happy to see it finally arrive. Second, it looks and sounds amazing! Third, Tim is AWESOME, and any excuse one may get to share his work is well worth taking. And finally, if Storm isn't already the official theme song of skeptics and freethinkers everywhere, it damn well should be.
I mean really, haven't we all been Tim, confronting our own personal "Storms" in various social situations throughout our lives? I know I have been, EVERYWHERE I GO, EVERY FRIGGIN' DAY!
Which is probably why I don't get invited out much anymore... Oh well. At least I still have you Internets!
Enjoy!

Et tu Spock?

Though obviously less active today where film and Television are concerned ( he actually announced his retirement from acting last year), like Shatner and the rest of the cast, Nimoy has gone on to do a variety of things post-Trek.
He's appeared in loads of television shows, the Star Trek Movies of course, two of which he directed ( he also directed Three Men and baby, which I did not know, but will try not to hold against him), he's an accomplished photographer (link contains naked people), AND he even managed to record an album of his own AS Mr. Spock.
So, if you're fan, why not take a moment to hop on Twitter wish @TheRealNimoy a Happy birthday?! Oh, and if you make a live long and prosper joke when you do it, you're a terrible human being and your children will all be born with two heads.

Shatner's 80th

But I simply could not pass up the oportunity to share one of my favorite things in the history of recorded time, Two of my favorite beings in the known universe, William Shatner and Henry Rollins (who's 50th I failed to mention last month), together performing the track “I can’t Get Behind That” from Shatner’s 2004 album, “Has Been”. Happy belated 80th Bill!
Enjoy.

This Week's Compendium

Once again I managed to Spend most of my free time busy on music this weekend, Which is a good thing, but, that also means it was a slow week on the blogs. None the less, While I only managed to squeeze in a single post here on Geekblog, I was able to get a hand full of strange and interesting things posted on Compendium this Week, beginning with:
The Czech Ballad of Swamp thing, which also serves as a showcase for a particularly amazing dance routine that I'm certain all the kids will soon be imitating. Next, came the fan-made trailer for E.T. 2, "Extinction", followed with a detailed account of how the male Anglerfish gets screwed, literally AND figuratively, there's Zombie art from Clint Langley, Henry Rollin's writes a Letter to Ann Coulter, and more. Plus there's a full weeks worth of posts from last week which I never got around to sharing here.
So please, if you haven't done so before, go and Check out my tumblr blog, Compendium oF Strange. It's a collection of strange and interesting art, music, and stories from around the web, and it's the blog I post in most often during the week- when I'm generally too busy working to find the time to sit and research science and news stories to write about here on Geekblog.

A little Sunday Blasphemy, Behemoth: Alas the Lord is Upon me

Haven't had time to write much this weekend as I have been busy learning new material for a potential drum audition I have in the works. But it's Sunday and there's always time for a little blasphemy, and there are few greater sources for blasphemy or expressing one's disdain for religion, in particular christianity, than Behemoth. So when I stumbled upon a video from the band that I had not yet seen, I knew it was the perfect post for a lazy Sunday afternoon.
I've mentioned these guys many times before in my twitter posts as well as here on the blog when I wrote about front man Nergal's public assertion of his continued rejection of religion in response to speculation that he had converted following his cancer diagnosis. But in case I didn't mention it then, this is hands down one of my favorite bands on the planet and they have been a big influence on my own (as of yet unpublished) death metal project in recent years. Their lyrics and musical style are of course what drew me to them initially but I also find their visual style, artwork, stage show, etc, equally enthralling. like most metal bands they have had their moments of silliness when it comes to music videos, as their production budget was clearly struggling to catch up to their vision, but lately their visual style, in particular their videos have taken on a Del Toro like quality that I find mesmerizing.
So, if your looking for something to scare the crap out of your religious friends and family with, or you happen to be a fellow fan of all things heavy who was turned off by the slower black metal style of earlier Behemoth releases, check out today's video for "Alas the Lord is Upon me" from their last studio release Evangelion, an exceptional album which has quickly made it's way into my list of all time favorites, the drum work is particularly impressive, so if you haven't before, then go check it out!
Enjoy!

Christmas With The Devil

Turns out someone did, and by someone I mean singer songwriter Judith Owen and comedian, writer, musician, actor, voice actor and Spinal Tap bassist (amongst many other things) Harry Shearer.
I think I may actually like this version better than the original.
Very cool, enjoy!
