The Pope says I'm a Nazi (t-shirt available soon)
As you are no doubt already aware, pope Palpatine-seen above beckoning two young boys to join the dark side-arrived in Brittan yesterday where he wasted no time engaging in the long standing catholic tradition of spreading ignorance and misinformation. This time around the emperor kicked things of by warning the largely secular nation about the dangers of atheism, wrongly sighting Hitler's drive to eradicate god from society as the catalyst which led to the evil of the Nazi regime, while simultaneously painting the church as a nobel leader who directly opposed Hitler's efforts.
"Even in our own lifetime, we can recall how Britain and her leaders stood against a Nazi tyranny that wished to eradicate God from society and denied our common humanity to many, especially the Jews, who were thought unfit to live. I also recall the regime's attitude to Christian pastors and religious who spoke the truth in love, opposed the Nazis and paid for that opposition with their lives. As we reflect on the sobering lessons of the atheist extremism of the twentieth century, let us never forget how the exclusion of God, religion and virtue from public life leads ultimately to a truncated vision of man and of society and thus to a "reductive vision of the person and his destiny"- Ratz
I could go on and on about why EVERYTHING he said is wrong, pointing out that Hitler's actual religious beliefs are unclear and that he actually spoke against atheism on several occasions. I could also point out that historically speaking the church's opposition to Hitler was at best, luke-warm. But I'm kind of hoping you already know all that and besides, it's the pope what did you expect? Facts?
Instead, here's someone much smarter than I am to tell you things you might not know about Ratzinger and the church, as well as expressing all of my own feelings on the Catholic church and it's role in the world more eloquently than I ever could.

Ratzinger's statement you quoted is indeed full of incorrect ideas, but not completely.
ReplyDeleteThere were indeed many pastors, christians etc. who did speak out against the Nazis (and protected Jews) and that did indeed pay for it with their lives.
The church of Rome did nothing but help Hitler most of the time.
Roman Catholicism is a false Christianity.
According to Nuremberg trials evidence, the Nazis next target after the Jews was the Christian church.
The truth is that Nazism was founded in Darwinism - which in turn was founded on materialism (atheism) - and which led to their mission of eliminating the "inferior races" in order to better build the "master race", all by helping evolution along by artificial selection.
I've been trying to decide how to respond to this all morning. Not because it confuses or challenges me in any way. But because your comment is filled with false assertions and speculations, which require more text to address than seems reasonable for a comment section. So, rather than trying to shove it all in here, I've decided to post this comment and respond in full in a separate entry.

Briefly-
This entry was written quite some time ago, when I was less careful about my wording- since no one was really reading anyway. So I agree that my statement that EVERYTHING he said was wrong, was too general. Yes there were pastors, ETC., who did oppose Hitler, protected Jews, and died because of it.
However, none of that changes the purpose of Ratzinger's statement or my objection to it, as the statement in question was meant to deliberately misrepresent- A) atheism as evil and destructive- B) Hitler's actions as the ultimate example of said evil and destruction- and C) The catholic church, and by proxy religious faith, as the noble savior of mankind. None of which is supported by the facts of reality.
Hitler's intent to attack the christian establishment is speculative, though I personally think it was likely; deeming Roman catholicism a "false" christianity is an indefensible position- based on logical fallacy; materialism is not atheism; Hitler and the Nazis banned Darwin's books, and Hitler's views had nothing to do with "Darwinism".
